Australia is served by four Croatian posts split by state: the Embassy in Canberra (the ACT, the NSW areas bordering it, and New Zealand), the Consulate General in Sydney (NSW, Queensland, the Northern Territory), the Consulate General in Melbourne (Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania) and the Consulate in Perth (Western Australia). The police document is the AFP National Police Certificate, and every Australian document is apostilled by DFAT — with one local rule that costs applicants more than any other: Canberra requires the apostille itself to be less than six months old.

What catches people out in Australia?

The law is the same everywhere. These are the local rules: the ones that are only written down at one post, or not written down at all.

  • Canberra’s six-month apostille window

    One consulate

    Most posts care how old the underlying certificate is. The Embassy in Canberra also requires the apostille to be under six months old, which means a correctly ordered but slowly assembled file can expire on a technicality — and an expired apostille means re-ordering the document, re-apostilling it and re-translating both. Assemble the Australian paperwork last, after the Croatian-side records are already in hand.

    The Australian split is by state rather than by distance, so a Brisbane applicant files in Sydney and an Adelaide applicant files in Melbourne. Book the appointment with the right post before ordering anything, because the recency clocks start at the document, not at the appointment.

  • Whether a local translator is accepted is not published

    Unconfirmed

    Croatian posts generally want translations by a Croatian court-certified translator (sudski tumač). Whether a locally certified Australian translator is accepted instead is not stated by any published Australian rule, so it cannot be promised either way. The safe route is a Croatian court translator; if you want to use a local one, get the post to confirm in writing first.
