Pathways to Croatian Citizenship

Croatian law provides several distinct routes to citizenship. Whether you have Croatian ancestry, are married to a Croatian citizen, or have lived in Croatia long-term, there is likely a pathway that applies to you.

01 / Routes for the diaspora

Two of the seven routes cover almost every family abroad.

Descent and membership of the Croatian nation are the routes this office files. Each has its own full guide.
  • PATHWAY 01Most common

    Citizenship by Descent

    If you have a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent who was a Croatian citizen, you may be eligible to apply. This is the most common route for diaspora families.

    Eligibility
    Direct descendants of Croatian citizens, regardless of how many generations removed.
    Process
    Collect birth, marriage, and citizenship certificates tracing your lineage to a Croatian ancestor. Apply through a Croatian consulate or embassy if residing abroad.

  • PATHWAY 02

    Citizenship as a Member of the Croatian Nation

    Available to those who can demonstrate a genuine affiliation with the Croatian people, even without direct ancestry, through identity declarations, cultural participation or community involvement.

    Eligibility
    Individuals who have declared Croatian identity in official documents, or who have actively participated in Croatian cultural, scientific, or sports associations abroad.
    Process
    Provide evidence of affiliation or organisational participation. Submit the application through a Croatian embassy or consulate.

02 / The other routes

Marriage, residence, merit and a few special cases.

These depend on living in Croatia, marrying a citizen, or a decision of the state. Listed here so you can rule them in or out.
  • PATHWAY 03

    Citizenship by Marriage

    Croatian Citizenship Act

    Foreign nationals married to a Croatian citizen may apply for citizenship after a qualifying period, provided the relationship is genuine and the applicant meets language and cultural requirements.

    Eligibility
    Spouses of Croatian citizens.
    Process
    Must be married for at least three years and living together. Must demonstrate Croatian language proficiency and a basic understanding of Croatian culture.
  • PATHWAY 04

    Citizenship by Naturalisation

    Croatian Citizenship Act

    Long-term residents of Croatia who have integrated into society may apply for citizenship after eight years of continuous residence. This period can be reduced in certain circumstances.

    Eligibility
    Long-term legal residents of Croatia.
    Process
    Meet the residency requirement (typically 8 years), demonstrate Croatian language proficiency, and show integration into Croatian society.
  • PATHWAY 05Selective

    Citizenship by Special Interest

    Croatian Citizenship Act

    The Croatian government may grant citizenship to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to Croatia: renowned scientists, athletes, artists or public figures of national significance.

    Eligibility
    Individuals with significant and demonstrable contributions to Croatia.
    Process
    Application reviewed and approved by the Ministry of the Interior. Requires documented evidence of contributions.
  • PATHWAY 06

    Re-Adoption of Former Citizenship

    Croatian Citizenship Act

    Former Croatian citizens who lost their citizenship, for example by acquiring citizenship in another country, can apply to have it reinstated.

    Eligibility
    Former Croatian citizens who have lost their citizenship.
    Process
    Submit documentation proving previous Croatian citizenship and the reasons for its loss.
  • PATHWAY 07

    Citizenship for Stateless Persons

    Croatian Citizenship Act

    Stateless individuals, or those unable to acquire citizenship elsewhere, may apply under specific humanitarian and legal criteria.

    Eligibility
    Stateless persons who meet specific legal or humanitarian criteria.
    Process
    Application through humanitarian and legal channels with the Croatian authorities.
